Fluorene (ㄨ, ') is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, with the molecular formula C13H10. It is found in the high-boiling components of automobile exhaust, corn whiskers, and coal tar. Combustible. Insoluble in water, soluble in benzene, carbon disulfide, ethanol and ether. Fluorene can be synthesized by industry and used as the precursor of Yindanshilin dyes, plastics and insecticides. From it can be synthesized 9-fluorenone, 9-fluorenone methanol and trinitrofluorenone (for electrostatic copying) and other chemicals. Polyfluorene can be used as a luminescent in organic light-emitting diodes. The 9-proton of fluofluan is acidic with a pKa of 22.6 (DMSO) and can be removed by a base (such as sodium hydroxide) to form an orange-yellow aromatic anion. The anion can be used as a nucleophile, substituting with the electrophilic reagent at 9-position. A derivative of fluorene, chloroformate-9-fluorenyl methyl ester (Fmoc-Cl), is used as a protective group for aminofluorenyl methoxycarbonyl in peptide synthesis.
